Product Overview

The Bosch DDH181X 18V Brute Tough Drill Driver now features Active Response Technology, an industry first that reduces the risk of dangerous kickback during high torque applications without compromising performance. Active Response Technology uses electronic motor control to reduce the risk of harmful torque reactions in bind-up situations. An integrated acceleration sensor limits the tool's rotation by detecting sudden movements and cutting off the motor to stop the tool. Feel more in control with the redesigned auxiliary handle. This handle is longer than previous versions and adjustable to 23 positions without having to remove it from the tool. A tongue-and-groove locking structure helps prevent slipping and increases control during use, while the 1/2 in. metal chuck delivers a high clamping force. Tackle even the toughest drilling and driving applications with 700 in-lbs of torque from the 4-pole open frame motor. Select between 2 speeds and 25 clutch settings to optimize available torque for precise screw driving and improved drilling speed. Built to be Brute Tough, the DDH181X features exclusive Durashield housing and an all metal gearbox and is capable of surviving 25 drops from 12 ft. high onto solid concrete. Bosch electronic motor and cell protection help prevent overheating and overloading , which extends tool life, runtime, and increases battery lifetime by more than 400%. For optimum results, pair this tool with Bosch's next generation BAT620 or BAT612 18V lithium-ion batteries (Sold Separately), which combine greater cell energy density for up to 65 percent longer runtime and advanced CoolPack technology for up to 100 percent more recharge-life.

Awesome drill
I love this drill it fits my hand perfectly, it is well balanced and powerful. The battery seems to last really long on a charge also. It is a really durable drill also, I have dropped it a couple of times and once it was from about six feet without hardly a scratch!!

Tamed Brute Force
Got the DDH181X with (2) 4AH bats & (1) BAT622 included - that was the deal maker. The competing brand "fuel" line has brushless higher torque units (> 1000 in-lb), but I'll probably never outgrow this drill (I'm over 65.) The active response has kicked in a couple times when I used an aggressive bit without the side handle - this is a good feature to have. This DDH181X has a larger all metal chuck than the DDS181 and more torque. Some reviews complain about the weight, but it weighs less (with a 4 AH battery) than my old Porter Cable 14.4V Nicad drill. Don't have lots of usage to report on so far - had it about a month. In the interim, I flew cross country to my parents home where I picked up the smaller DDS181 with slim pack bats (for maintenance around their home). The DDS181 is a bit lighter, a little less torque and maybe not as rugged in the gear dept., but it solves most needs for home maintenance. Back home, I'm rebuilding fences so the DDH181X was obtained as I thought I would need a more robust drill for larger projects (#10, #12 screws and up). The side handle has a flexible choice of positions, unlike the "red" brand, which I though to be awkward. FAULTS: The service drawings indicate the motor must be replaced to change out the brushes - unlike my old "yellow" drill. Bosch does not appear to have an 18V brushless design for the high torque (> 1000 in-lb, as of 5-2016) - unlike the competition. The warranty is only 3 years, but if this makes it past the first year, it will probably outlive me. OTHER: For concrete & demo, I have a mains powered VSR hammer drill which is rarely used. For smaller projects I have the ultralight 12V brushless model.
